Paradise and pizza on the Amalfi Coast

Friday, 12th September 2008

Written by Francesca Cookney

Pizza lovers should head to Naples in the following weeks for the city's annual pizza festival.

The culinary extravaganza, organised by the Varace Pizza Association, runs from September 11 to 21 and boasts a schedule jam-packed with events, shows, live entertainment and, of course, pizza.

As well as workshops on "the chemistry of Neapolitan Pizza", visitors can enjoy live music and a whole host of local celebrity appearances and will also get to vote for the best pizzeria as part of the "Vota la Pizza 2008" contest. And if you tire of pizza (surely not!), Naples has plenty to offer by way of tourist attractions including what is rightly deemed to be Europe's most important archaeological museums, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale.

It boasts one of the world's greatest collections of Greek and Roman artefacts as well as a whole host of treasures from Pompeii which is itself just a stone's throw away, the great Vesuvius looming above it.

Both are easily accessible via the Circumvesuviana train from Naples. Slightly further afield is Sorrento and the beautiful island of Capri which at this time of year is not only a breathtaking day out but, with the summer's crowds of holiday-makers finally heading home, is at its most peaceful.

So you can visit paradise by day before heading back to the city for yet another pizza supper.
