The Mayor of London has proposed a new strategy to deal with youth crime in the capital involving renewed investment into sports and education as well as a citywide crackdown on anti-social behaviour.
In an article for The Sun newspaper, Mr Johnson wrote: "Too many children are growing up in London without ambition and without boundaries. They lack respect and self-respect, and though they seem to lack shame, their cockiness often masks a fragility and anger that no one has taken the trouble to give them discipline or hope."
He also hopes to set up a charity in the new year called The Mayor's Fund for London which aims to raise money for volunteers and groups working with young people, increasing their opportunities and minimising the temptation to turn to gun and knife crime.
"In the last 18 months, I have met hundreds of people - social entrepreneurs, teachers, pastors, charity workers, community workers - all dedicated to changing the lives of young people. We must recognise and champion the achievements of these groups," he wrote.
Reports suggest he is also looking to develop strategies to help young offenders, providing more programmes for those in prison that will allow them to gain skills and qualifications that will improve their chances of employment upon release.
