Dutch government admits to funding 'gay reform' movement

A Dutch MP has admitted to supporting the funding of Christian organisations that claim to help gay people 'reform' and turn heterosexual.
Dutch Emancipation Minister Ronald Plasterk named Onze Weg (Our Way) and Refo Anders as two such 'ex gay' groups who are receiving state subsidies. The former currently enjoys a sum of 50,000 euros while the latter an astonishing 84,000 euros. Critics have long branded the groups' notion that they can 'cure' homosexuality ridiculous but now Dutch newspaper, De Pers has revealed that in fact no such 'cure' is even sought.
The groups consider a gay person reformed when he or she agrees not to practice homosexuality. Refo Anders chairman Johan Quist told the paper: "Homosexual feelings are okay. But we reject practicing homosexuals". They instead work with therapists to encourage gay Christians to either live celibate or in false heterosexual relationships.
Gay rights organisation COC is appalled that the Dutch government would support this. "Minister Plasterk is normally a man of sound judgement. It looks like a political compromise with ChristenUnie," said COC chairman, Wouter Neerings. But Mr Plasterk has defended the move, saying that to make homosexuality a topic of discussions within Christian organisations is progress in itself:
"These organisations have access to circles where there would otherwise be no homo-emancipation at all. Of course I do not support the aims completely, but they have taken important hurdles. For example, the recognition that there are homosexuals in Christian circles."
