Greener getaways for the environmentally-conscious

These days we can't help but be aware of the effect of our lifestyles on the planet. From recycling our newspapers to choosing our bikes over our cars, we're all trying to do our bit for the environment.

When it comes to holidays, though, we don't seem quite so keen to jump on the eco-bandwagon. But it's not all mud huts and hemp, travel agents are popping up everywhere and offering everything from family holidays to backpacking and honeymoon ideas. Hotels boast entirely renewable energy resources while even the most luxury resorts work with the local community to create sustainable economies in and outside of the tourist season.

Whether you're after hands-on conservation projects or just want to lie on a beach for two weeks, they promise to make your vacation as green as possible. For exotic yet eco-friendly, try the Amazon Community Ecolodge in the beautiful Pantanal region of Brazil, where the local community run a sustainable business in fish from their Amazon lake while harvesting nuts and other Amazonian plants for oils.

As well as the breathtaking landscapes, this wetland area boasts some of the most diverse and abundant wildlife in the western hemisphere and you can explore safe in the knowledge that your visit is both sustainable and responsible. Of course, you do have to fly there…
