A man found naked inside a supermarket chimney has pleaded not guilty to attempted burglary.
20-year old Daniel Davis, who was rescued from inside an old chimney at the Tesco Express in Wigan, claims he fell in whilst on the run from some men he owed money, the court heard. The emergency service were called at around 5.30am after cries were heard "seemingly emanating" from the building's rooftop.
Upon further investigation, firefighters were called who were able to take apart the chimney where they found the young man trapped inside. "Police arrived and heard shouting, essentially saying 'Help, get me out, I'm stuck,'" the prosecution told the court.
"Emergency services were called ... they removed the chimney breast and found inside a naked man, now known to be this defendant, who was stuck inside." He lost his clothes in an attempt to wriggle free, he explained.
Davis has been remanded in custody and the case will go to trial at Liverpool crown court later this week. Defence lawyer, Andrew Stock, said his client was the victim of an unfortunate accident and had no intention of trying to rob the store.
"Whichever way you look at this case, it is perhaps unique," he said. "He had no intention at all of stealing any property."
