Obama names Hilary Clinton as US Secretary of State

After weeks of speculation US president elect Barack Obama has confirmed Hilary Clinton as his choice for Secretary of State.
He described the decision as a mark of his seriousness when it comes to foreign policy, saying of his former presidential rival, that she “possesses an extraordinary intelligence and a remarkable work ethic. I’m proud she will be our next Secretary of State”. Clinton will take up the country’s most senior diplomatic role, drawing on her international experience as well as her familiarity with many world leaders.
“America cannot solve these crises without the world and the world cannot solve them without America,” she said upon accepting the role. Current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also had warm words for her successor saying, “I know that she will bring enormous energy and intellect and skill to the position,” and adding that, “I am very fond of her.”
But the appointment will not be met so eagerly by everybody and Obama himself acknowledges that there may by conflict within his new security team, not least on account of his selection of Robert Gates as Defence Secretary. Mr Gates has held the position under President Bush since 2006 and in appointing him Obama also fulfils his promise to include a Republican in the cabinet.
Among the other names announced are lawyer Eric Holder as Attorney General and Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano as Homeland Security Secretary.
