Police on the hunt for vicious kitten killers in Springdale, USA

Monday, 15th September 2008

Written by Francesca Cookney

Ten kittens have been killed and ten more are missing from an animal shelter in Springdale, Arkansas. A car park cleaner stumbled upon six of the poor animals in the early hours of September 11, beaten to death and smashed onto the hard ground outside the Home Depot in Fayetteville.

Upset and bemused, he immediately informed the authorities but just hours later, the kitten killer struck again. Employees arriving at Springdale Animal Services later that day were met with the sight of four tiny kittens, all less than eight weeks old, dashed against the concrete floor.

This, combined with the presence of tags around the kittens' necks reading "9/11", was enough for the police to launch an investigation. Unfortunately, they don't have an awful lot to go on at the moment.

It seems clear that the animal services building was broken into at some point the night before; staff found that some kittens had been placed in dog cages and yet more were let out of their cages and were discovered running around the shelter. But aside from security videos at the Depot and possible witnesses, there seems little chance of pinpointing a suspect.

For many this will probably seem like a stupid stunt but, says Sam Goade of the Springdale Animal Services "it's very traumatic on the employees […] they're animal lovers and when they come to work and find that the animals had been killed during the night it's very difficult for them".
