| Many men feel insecure about the size of their penis, despite having enough length and girth to satisfy their partner. Performing well as lovers and competition with other men has lead to widespread mania that ‘more is better’.
Does size really matter?
Most women would be shocked to know just how many men worry about size, and cannot possibly understand the masculine obsession with penile measurement. To the average man, his penis is one of the most important things in the world. From an early age, be it consciously or unconsciously, he develops a life-long fascination with his penis, comparing it to his father’s, brother’s or other men in the changing room, wondering if his will ever be as big as theirs.
Belittling a man’s length and/or girth, even as joke, can be extremely hurtful. Such careless remarks, albeit innocent, can cause feelings of inadequacy, which in turn can lead to a variety of sexual problems, such as impotence (erectile dysfunction). And even more distressing, is the fact that these men have nothing to worry about.
Most doctors suggest that men try view their penis from an objective point of view. When you glance down you only get a foreshortened view, making your penis appear shorter than what it really is, whilst when you see another man’s penis, without the foreshortening effecting, he looks more endowed.
How big is big enough?
Just as we all have different size feet, men have different sized penises - but in no way is size a sign of virility or adequacy, nor is it relative to race, height and/or stature. Distinguished American researchers Masters and Johnson measured the penile lengths of more than 300 men and found that the average non-erect penis measured between 8.5cm and 10.5cm (3-4 inches). The largest measured 14 cm (5.5 inches) and was that of a slim man who was 5' 7" tall. In contrast, the smallest penis measured 6cm (2.25 inches), which belonged to a heavily built man who was 5' 11" tall.
The researchers also noted that many factors, such as swimming and cold weather can cause a temporary shrinkage of two inches or more. And perhaps more interesting, and something every man should heed, is that most penises are very similar in size when erect. A man with a 'smaller' non-erect penis usually achieves a 100% increase when sexually aroused, whilst a man with a 'larger' non-erect penis achieves up to a 75% increase.
Treatment
For those who do feel insecure about the size of their penis, there are various surgical procedures available, which can lengthen or increase the girth of the penis. However, before beginning such a process, doctors must first evaluate the patient's reasons for and expectations of the surgery, and that they are psychologically fit for such a procedure.
If you are unhappy with the size of your penis but don't want to commit to surgery or are too shy to broach the subject with your GP, there are now plenty of treatments available to buy at your discretion.
